My niece Amanda is turning one quarter of a century old on the 12th of April. I can’t believe it has been 25 years since I sat with my sister, Nancy and held her hand while she gave birth to Amanda. My brother-in-law, Geoff had to travel out of the country for a day or two and as Murphy’s Law would have it Amanda was born a week early while her father was abroad.
I was only 17 at the time but, I had attended one Lamaze class with my big sister and I was spending the weekend at her house while Geoff was out of town. So that qualified me to be the one to stay with her in the birthing room.
Nancy and I watched the Oscars on TV during her labor and I think it is the only year that I have ever watched the entire Oscars award ceremony. It was a good way to pass the time and for my sister to forget her labor pains for a while.
My sister didn’t have an epidural and yet ,she was so calm and brave the whole time. She did squeeze my hand very tightly at times and she muttered a curse word or two but, overall she really made the whole birthing process look easy. And when Amanda was born she and I shared tears of joy and relief together.
I made this card for Amanda’s birthday and I want her to know how much I love her. Happy birthday, Amanda!
The inside of the card says Happy Birthday. “A Little Birdie Told Me”
